Sahaj Kohli, MA.Ed, LGPC, NCC is a therapist, writer, and the founder of Brown Girl Therapy (@browngirltherapy), the first and largest mental health and wellness community organization for children of immigrants. Sahaj is also a weekly advice columnist for the Washington Post and is writing a book with Penguin Life, But What Will People Say, to be published in Spring 2024.

Join NYPL, Asian American Writers’ Workshop, South Asian Journalists Association, and Asian American Journalists Association-NY for a celebration of award winning journalist Prachi Gupta’s highly anticipated memoir.

How are stories in society constructed? How do we understand who we are when the narrative about us is stronger than our sense of self? How can we reclaim our narratives through storytelling and memoir? Join Prachi, writer Anuradha Bhagwati, sociologist Margaret Abraham, therapist and writer Sahaj Kohli, and journalist Lakshmi Gandhi in discussing the complex realities of both what we stand to gain—and lose—by acts of reclamation within the context of the South Asian American diaspora.

This reading is followed by a moderated conversation with Damon Young, an audience Q&A, and a book signing. Damon Young is a writer, satirist, and current host and creator of the Crooked Media podcast Stuck With Damon Young. His debut memoir, What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker: A Memoir In Essays, won the 2020 Thurber Prize for American Humor and Barnes & Noble’s 2019 Discover Award. He is also the co-founder and former editor-in-chief of the culture blog VerySmartBrothas. Damon was a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and a columnist for GQ and The Washington Post Magazine, and his writing has been featured in the AtlanticEsquireNY Mag, the UndefeatedEbony, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Join Prachi Gupta and Connie Wang for an in-person conversation about They Called Us Exceptional. Connie Wang is a journalist and writer based in Los Angeles. She was born in Jinan, China, raised in Minnesota, and went to school at UC Berkeley. Formerly, she was the executive editor at Refinery29 where she hosted and co-produced a documentary series called Style Out There that reported on fashion subcultures around the world. Her debut book, Oh My Mother! A Memoir in Nine Adventures is with Viking Books, and came out this May.
